A couple of months ago, I called this facility to schedule an appointment to have my IUD replaced, as it had been nearly five years since it was inserted. During the call, the lady who answered asked for the reason for the appointment. When I explained, she just told me that IUDs can last up to seven years. I found this response very inappropriate and frustrating, especially since she is not a medical professional and was unaware of my personal health history or situationRegardless of general guidelines about IUD duration, it was not her place to advise me or question my decision to have it removed/replaced. Since then, I have consulted with multiple doctors who all told me that the IUD is considered effective for only five years. Everytime when I go to see a OB/GYN, it always reminds me this thing and I still feel bad and pissed about the whole thing. I feel healthcare staff, even those answering phones, should be trained to respond with empathy and avoid giving unsolicited medical advice. It’s important that patients feel supported, not second-guessed, when they seek care.
