My husband of 33 years died at Select Specialty. He was a fall-risk patient on a ventilator. He was found on the floor with his head on the bed. According to his medical records, my husband tried to get out of bed twice that day. It's noted that he was confused and told staff he was tired of being in bed, and still, with all the chances they had to protect him, I get a call just before falling asleep telling me that my husband was found on the floor and had died, but was resuscitated. I was also told he had had an anoxic brain injury. I had seen him just hours before. He was transferred to a different facility. My husband never regained consciousness. He officially died two weeks later. I will miss him always. He really was, and is, the love of my life. He is the person I wanted to spend my life with. My heart is forever changed. The hurt is deep. I wish I had never agreed to my husband being transferred to Select Specialty. My condolences to those who suffer as I do.

My husband’s 1st stay was 4 weeks from Jan 2022 - feb 2022. It was a step down from ICU. Then 2nd visit was 5 weeks from May 2022 until the end of June 2022. This is for the downtown location located on the 11th floor of Banner University. Both stays he received great care from doctors, nurses, respiratory techs and CNA’s and therapy was awesome. Reada the social worker was very helpful- she’s wonderful.
My husband was on a ventilator and the 2nd stay, they were able to wean him off of it. Dr Majeed was my main contact because of the time I visited, he is awesome. He listens, he cares and he helped. All staff were very helpful, and someone was always willing to answer any questions or find the answer. Due to my husband’s lengthy hospitalization in ICU, I learned to call around 11am & 11pm for updates. Sometimes it was difficult to speak to a nurse at Select but I understood that they were busy with patients. I would just keep trying.
Overall, I chose for him to return the 2nd time around. I knew they did a good job and yes, it wasn’t perfect, but any issues or concerns were dealt with in a timely manner and I knew my husband was safe here and received quality care. Here, all patients have good sized, private rooms with a big window. His room was cleaned daily and safety protocols were always followed.
Some staff stand out more than others, they have excellent customer service, but overall, it’s a great place for your loved one to recover. I always remember to treat people how I like to be treated and I’ve never had an issue with any staff. My husband has been hospitalized continuously since Nov 2021 and he’s been in and out of ICU and at different hospitals etc, all staff that are treated with respect will reciprocate.

This place is fantastic, my 26 year old son collapsed possible stroke, ended up on life support for 5 weeks. He came to select specialty hosp for rehab and high level medical. They understand this situation is hard on the family also. They were courteous, caring and professional. We had a slight problem the first week, I spoke to the case manager (Shamille, who by the way is wonderful) and it was taken care of the same day! Would recommend this place to anyone! They are a truly wonderful place! Thanks to everyone for making a sad situation that much easier to take.

I just had my Husband transferred yesterday. to Select Speciality Already I am stressed and confused. Our daughter was the first on scene to make sure the transfer went smooth and if there was anything she could do to help, understanding that they are understaffed and have employed travelers and new grads.
Upon clearance and sign -in , she was given a lecture on CDC guidelines about visitation. Those guidelines included, masking up, sit 6 feet away from patient and absolutely no touching.
After looking up current CDC guidelines for visitations. They went as followed:
If both Patient & visitor were vaccinated no masking needed for visitations. Did not mention anything about no touching, stay six feet away .!!
This has turned into a very stressful situation:
!. My husband is non-verbal right now, so shouting at him across the room is ridiculous. To not be able to touch and reassure him is so agonizing,.
2. The nurse staff is so overwhelmed, that some of his basic needs have not been addressed in a timely manner
* oral care
* releasing his restrains every two hours for range of motion, hands and arms.
* lotion body / massage ROM legs.
* turning to prevent Bed sores
* raising him up in bed so his feet are not continuing to slam on the foot board
* We were not told before admission about the restrictions with touch
As most of us know and understand, touch allows us to communicate and studies show over and over again, how healing and reassuring, touch is. Why have all the policy makers ignored this basic human need.
We are told CDC CDC, well Select policies are not guided by
CDC,
* We were also told that they are only protecting the patients, Well I'm here to call policy makers on the carpet...

I myself have told our family and friends, that you have a right to not be vaccinated. But that you are not allowed to Visit my husband at the Hospital per my request. All are understanding.

I on the other hand have no idea about the vaccination status of any of the staff that are coming in contact with not only my Husband but other Patients, and they are going from room to room ?

I am not frustrated with any of the staff at this point, They are just trying to stay out of harm's way. I do understand that most know that this is a stupid and ineffective way to handle health care, in fact substandard care has come up in conversations.

I would like to have a face to face conversation with some kind of policy maker. I was told that Select Speciality is such a huge corp, so good luck with getting anywhere with this topic.
I want to be able to reinforce my pain and concern and to be put in a position to help with policy change that helps to heal not isolate patients.

My father was transferred to select at the end of December after suffering a tbi. I have to say most of the RNs, CNAs and therapist are very kind and helpful. I appreciate everything that they do. With that being said there are some staff an RNs and that really need to get their act together. These are our family members that you are taking care of. Their attitudes need to go if you didn’t not want to take care of people find another job. My father has an IV the is very painful and the dr told the Rn to remove it from his hand and move it. It was not done hours later. He has has to sit in his own feces and already has a rash. No one answer when the help button is pushed. This facility needs to reevaluate the staff they are hiring. I completely understand that every hospital is short staffed and everyone is tired but it doesn’t take much to be compassionate. Again this is my father who I will fight for, he might be able to speak for himself but I sure will stick up for him. So take your attitude and incompetence some where else.

The Nurses, PT, OT, ST, CNA’s, Doctors & Case Managers, are all truly wonderful & caring people! Being in a hospital is never a “good” thing, but everyone here at Select Specialty Hospital Phoenix has done an amazing job in caring for my Husband. We truly are grateful & wouldn’t hesitate to highly recommend this facility.

My loved one died here, and I would never, ever recommend this facility to anyone!! The facility is old, rundown with very antiquated equipment. The air conditioner was broken, which I think negatively contributed to my Mom's ability to get better. They like to tout their affiliation with Banner Good Sam and are connected by a tunnel in case of emergencies. When she went into Code Blue, they never took her over to Good Sam. They have their own doctors and nurses and only "consult" with the medics at the hospital. I am still devastated that we did not have many choices on where to take our loved one for rehabilitation. Looking back, we tried to make the best decision for our loved one's long-term care. Unfortunately, this is not the place to take anyone you love to get better.

My husband was sent to select specialty hospital from the ICU at banner. I must say my first impression was not good. The building is older and there's a lot of people in the hallways. After coming from banner they had big shoes to fill. I am pleased to say my husband received outstanding care at this facility. We did have a situation that was not good and definitely should have never happened. The first week we were there my husband was on a ventilator, feeding tube, catheter and lots of IV'S . My husband had a bowel movement so I notified his nurse who was sitting right outside his room at her portable desk. She told me the CNA was busy with another patient. 20 minutes went by do again I told her he needed help to get cleaned up, again she told me the CNA was still busy. After 30 minutes went by I was getting really upset, at this point I told her this was unacceptable and I needed to speak to the charge nurse. Then and only then did she get out of her chair and get the CNA to help clean him up. She wasn't happy about it either. 2 days later, I noticed my husband urine looked more like blood. I took a picture of the urine hanging g on the bedside and sent it to my best friend who is a RN. She said he has a horrible bladder infection. To make a long story short, because the nurse felt it wasn't her job to clean up my husband he got septic. The bacteria from the bowel movement got right in thru the catheter and into his blood stream. He was septic with ecoli bacteria. This set my husband back about 5 weeks. He became very very sick. His care after this incident was fantastic. You would think I would have nothing g good to say after what we went thru . But the way I see it is one bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch. I am only upset that they didnt reprimand her for leaving a patient like that. Nothing but lazi ess on her part. This hospital is really good at what they do. I will miss the staff.
