My plan for 2024 was to up my “exercise game” to include some kind of resistance or strength training. I’ve been primarily walking 15-20 miles a week as my exercise of choice for several years. When a Transverse Myelitis diagnosis was handed to me in January of this year, physical therapy was the prescribed treatment. I’m so grateful to have found Ascend Physical Therapy and Pilates Wellness in Castro Valley! Gina Nasrah, the owner of this Pilates studio, knows her stuff!!! I look forward to my weekly Pilates class and am thrilled with the strength and balance that I’m developing. I am a physical therapist with 19 years of experience in the hospital setting. I developed an overuse injury that countless people couldn't pin down, and I was useless to help myself. After six months of barking up the wrong tree and going on short term disability, a friend recommended I make the 40 minute trip to see Gina for a consult.

She listened to my issues, methodically asked me pointed follow-up questions and performed an exam. She had my problem pinned down during that session and offered hope that she could help me. All of the strange constellation of symptoms that I had were related after all, and she had logical explanations for what I was feeling and what needed to be done to rehabilitate. She gave me a manageable amount of things to consider and habits to change in my everyday life, alongside exercises that built upon each other in complexity. Gina has excellent training and experience under her belt & utilizes a variety of methods to achieve positive outcomes: manual techniques, taping, core strengthening, traditional exercises, as well as Pilates-based exercises. Her attention to detail is superb.

As I came closer to returning to work, she focused my sessions and home exercises to mimic the common work functions I perform, and referenced all the exercises from previous weeks of therapy as things I could use to treat myself if things flared up. She talked me down off a cliff multiple times when I came in feeling like I had overdone it and helped steady my ship to continue forward.

I have been back to work for several months now and am grateful to Gina for restoring my abilities to work full time as well as function like a normal human in every day activities. As a fellow therapist: nothing but the highest respect for her practice and skill level. Everyone needs a tune up and a trained eye on them every now and then. There are many therapists out there, but finding a gifted one who listens and can meet your needs will make all the difference. And as my family says, Gina is my game changer.
