I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Huner and her team at Ascension St. Vincent's Vestavia Hills Primary Care. From the moment I walked into her office, I felt understood and genuinely cared for. Dr. Huner takes the time to listen to my concerns and thoroughly addresses each one while allowing me to participate in my care plan. I’ve never had to leave a PCP before unless I was moving, and I am doing so with such a bad taste in my mouth, as my concerns here as a patient weren’t received at all. I called in to make a last-minute appt for an accident I had while I was hiking and, after several days of monitoring me, my physician spouse advised me to seek a PCP visit. I came in and was led into a room by a nurse who walked in with a needle and immediately told me I was getting an injection. No one evaluated me or asked any medical questions. As a patient, I care deeply about the fundamental ethics of medical care, informed consent, and the inherent power dynamics between medical providers and patients. Now, I have felt heard by Dr. Huner during my annual visits so I felt comfortable writing a message expressing my disappointment and noting worries I had about the swelling in my neck. Instead of taking this as an opportunity to re-establish trust, Dr. Huner doubled down on the decision to have me injected by the nurse, offering no further options for patient education or avenues to receive some guidance or assurance. Per my M.D. spouse, “this isn’t a simple skin rash,” so the dismissive “most patients love doing a nurse visit” reply I received is out of line: I get that this practice is super busy but I am not “most patients” — I am your patient. I never come in for any acute concerns outside of my annual visits and this was a missed opportunity to deliver high-quality care. Giving injections without an evaluation, patient education, and informed consent is, if not, borderline negligent, then at least, lacking in proper bedside manner.

They decided to call me the day before my scheduled appointment to say I was unable to come to my appointment the following day since it was scheduled for a new doctor. Was told I would have to wait two-three months to schedule a new appointment with either new or old doctors. Don’t understand why they could not have disclosed this to me when the appointment was originally scheduled not the day before otherwise I would have immediately gone to other options instead of wasting a month with no care.

Dr. Colvard and his staff are great. The nurses and office staff are always in a wonderful mood which makes my visit enjoyable. Dr Colvard has been my primary care doctor for about 10 years. He is a great listener and takes the time to really manage my health. I fully understand his care strategy and what I need to do in order to stay healthy.

Dr. Carrie Huner is such a kind, encouraging person!! She is interested in you and your health. She’s very good at referring you to whatever specialist you might need. She has a wealth of knowledge about issues regarding senior adults! I’m extremely pleased that she’s my primary physician!!!

This was my first appointment with Dr. Huner. Every person that I met with that day from the front desk, nurses, Dr. Huner, and the lab technician was so helpful! I was running late and they graciously “went the extra mile” to make sure I was able to keep my appointment and receive the care I needed. My experience was truly exceptional!
