I came for a day knee replacement surgery and ended up staying overnight, through the following afternoon. My surgical team was great, and the recovery room staff were attentive. One of the particularly great recovery nurses even went out of her way to stop in to see me the next day. The nursing staff during the day seemed fine, although stretched thin. They seemed thoughtful in terms of offering helpful suggestions in response to any questions I had, or recognizing my needs. However, on at least one occasion, it took 2.5 hours past when I began calling for pain meds (and when I knew I was allowed to get them) until the nurse(whom I liked very much) was able to get to me and discuss my needs.
However, I am mostly writing my review to express the sharp contrast with the night nursing staff and environment, which I later referred to as the "night circus." Although there was no actual nursing station outside my room, staff could be heard very loudly laughing and joking throughout the night. I was able to get someone to close my door, since I was unable to get to the door myself, but that only slightly minimized the noise. I even heard loud commentary on specific patients , including their room numbers. Moreover, my own assigned nurse was cold and unfriendly, and appeared to accuse and blame me several times for not doing something I had not known I was supposed to do. When I attempted to advocate for myself in expressing my specific wishes regarding my care, she argued with me, citing her own needs, rather than recognizing mine. Her explanations were incomplete and unhelpful, and at one point when I changed my mind about a particular confusing option when I finally thought I understood it, she thanked me for not wasting her time! I would definitely not recommend this hospital for an overnight stay.

I had a great, first time, procedure done there yesterday. I can't say enough about the nurses there. Michelle was my pre-op nurse... very caring and professional. the ER staff was absolutely welcoming, friendly, professional & extremely caring. I can't say enough about the recovery nurse, Bethany ... she was absolutely fabulous. While there for several hours, you pick up on a lot of things, she multitasked like no other. Very much a team player with others & just a very professional, caring and Passionate & patient.
I can't thank Bethany & the other nurses enough 🩷
Oh & Dr James, FABULOUS 👍🏼
Thank you all again
Sincerely

I have been to Needham Beth Israel multiple times for both Emergency visits and specialist visits. It is wonderful to have such a competent hospital within 5 miles of my home. Employees have always been friendly and accommodating, and I am thrilled with every one of my specialists. As a retired Emergency Room nurse, I totally understand that in the ER, patients are seen in order of severity of illness. When wait times were longer than usual, I was always kept informed and checked in on frequently.
Also want to shout out to the BIDN radiology department. All employees I have encountered are friendly, competent and genuinely seem happy to be employed at this facility.
Parking can be a bit difficult at certain hours but the valet service always comes in handy in a pinch! Give yourself an extra 15 minutes on the front end and a spot usually opens up.

I am disgusted by the schedulers and the front desk staff at this hospital. When you actually meet the doctors and medical staff, they're great. But the red tape to get through to them is being held in a vice grip by miserable women who do not care about helping you. Awful experience every single time I need to make an appt here for a procedure or follow up. I was ordered for stat imaging and not 1 person has called me back or been helpful on the process. AWFUL!

I received an invoice today from BILH Needham today for lab fees back from my PCP (BIDH Medfield). This bill was received today (3/5/25) for services rendered on 4/2/2024, just under one year after DOS. While looking at my invoice, I noticed that it said my insurance did not pay. I called and spoke with representative, Amber, who was extremely argumentative and would not initially tell me if my insurance did in fact make payment or not. Amber finally said they billed my insurance 3x between 4/2024-9/2024 and all claims were rejected because the insurance company “could not locate the plan.” Aka they were using the wrong ID number. I asked Amber to reach out to my PCP office as they are connected offices and she continued to cut me off to state that this is not how the hospital takes care of billing. Apparently, Beth Israel takes care of billing by repeatedly submitting invalid claims to plans that could not be located and never contacting the patient to get the correct ID, then send an invoice 11 months later. This is apparent that whoever submits claims here is only walking through the motions. As someone who works in the insurance industry, I am astonished at the lack of effort made to get this claim corrected either by speaking with a representative, or contacting the patient directly.

Please, if you have another option to go to another emergency center go there. This place does not treat it's patients well. I spent 11 hours there for them to give me multiple exams and give me no answers to how to help my pain. I ended up getting transferred to Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston for them to give me emergency surgery. I wasted so much time at this Needham location. The staff barely saw me Throughout my 11 hour stay, I only saw my doctor around the ninth hour. Some nurses on the staff were rude and unhelpful. It was an awful experience and I'm trying to spread the word and tell my love ones and friends never go to this hospital. This hospital will not treat you right.

I will start this off by staying this only is a review of the ER department. My fiancé went in yesterday with a throbbing jugular vein, chest discomfort, weakness and extreme fatigue (and a few other symptoms). He was brought back pretty quickly but that's where the care stops. I guess it was busy yesterday so he had a hallway bed, so you could see nurses and doctors walking by and talking etc. He expressed his concerns and shared the reasons why he was there. The most they did was check his ears, nose and throat with a light like they do at the doctors office for a check up. Then did chest X-ray and found nothing since it wasn't what was bothering him. They refused to check his heart and the doctor didn't even feel his neck where his vein is hurting. I went in and asked for him to get a blood test at the very least, and the doctor brushed me off and said he just had a viral infection. He saw the doctor 2 times, that's it and it was a walk by convo, he wouldn't even stop to listen to either of us or have any sort of meaningful convo about care. WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD AT AN ER. If you can go to a different hospital ER, go. We love Beth Israel but NOT BIDMC NEEDHAM ER!!!!

My daughter required urgent medical care after experiencing a fall while walking our dog. She went to the BID emergency room in Needham with a bloody eye wound, bleeding gash on her hand, and scrapes & swelling on her knee and thigh. After x-rays of her hand, she sat for three hours before receiving stiches to close the eye wound and cleaning and bandaging for her hand. When I sent a text she told me about the wait. I called the emergency room and asked why there was such a long delay. I was told there was only one doctor on duty, who was dealing with a critical emergency. I was also told by the receptionist that my daughter received an x-ray and there was no fracture, and her assigned nurse would check-in on her. The nurse did not check-in and I had more information than my daughter. It was inappropriate and illegal for the receptionist to give me private patient information, especially since she could not verify my identity. After my second phone call the doctor finally attended to the wounds, and my daughter received stitches. The medical care was adequate. However, compassionate, respectful, professionalism, mentioned in the core values on the BID Needham website are nonexistent. One doctor on duty and nurses who don't check-in on patients in an emergency room, and a receptionist who shares patient information over the phone is unacceptable. If the wait is going to be three hours tell your patients, so they don't languish in pain and discomfort, in an uncaring environment. Give your patients the option to make an informed decision to wait or seek emergency services at another medical facility. And don't share patient information over the phone!
