I was sent to this hospital about a year ago and honestly had the worst time of my life. After leaving I have not talked to anyone about how I feel because I had such an unpleasent time at this hospital that I never want to experience something like this ever again. In the middle of the night I had many things taken from me by the staff including money my mom had sent me to buy myself snacks from the vending machine. Some of the staff have very nasty attitudes and I'm very quiet and I'd wait for a staff member to notice me waiting for them but some would just stare at me like I was crazy. They don't do anything to make patients more comfortable, we had to walk in the rain in just our socks, another patient threw a ball at my head and not a single staff seemed to care. I was very quiet and noone did anything for me to be more comfortable.

I was admitted here due to exhaustion, fatigue, and hypercalcemia. I was held down and given medication against my will. I have bruises on my body. I did have an advocate to defend my rights and luckily was released within a reasonable time frame. I feel sorry for those though, who that perhaps are confused by the system and unable to speak their truth clearly. They are victimized in a place that supposedly stands for rehabilitation. Pharmaceuticals are dangerous especially for those of us that are free from that paradigm. I have no family history of mental illness, substance abuse, or co-dependency yet my records were not taken into account. I was almost drugged with something I was allergic to & luckily a kind nurse listened to me before they dosed me. I believe by the time I left my stay my records were up to date and my aftercare therapy is going well. If you or someone you love is hospitalized you must advocate for your rights to control your own body!!! (I’ll spare everyone the horrific pictures of my bruises on my arms and legs.)

I'm very thankful to the staff at the hospital getting me back to recovery. I felt very safe. Although it was a crisis time, I enjoyed the time spent with the staff & other clients. I feel well equiped so I won't relapse.

This hospital held our loved one beyond a 5150 hold when they had no legal grounds to do so (this person was clinically not a danger to themselves, others or gravely disabled). When asking for an AMA form to self discharge, the hospital instead threatened them with a 5250 hold (14 days) based on zero medical grounds. Even when clients are involuntarily hospitalised, their rights should be protected. That is California law, and this hospital and their workers seriously failed to uphold this basic standard. They also have a legal obligation to continually inform their patients about what is happening and why, but the hospital staff failed to do this as well, as they would not share their reasons with our hospitalised loved one for holding them longer than their 72 hour hold. Our family is waiting for the giant exposé that is for sure going to come out of this place, and waiting for the inevitable government shut down of BHC and class action lawsuit. Overall, our collective experience here was traumatising and disheartening. The staff could not care less. But if you’re able to have some autonomy over where you or your loved one is hospitalised for mental health or substance abuse issues, do not choose this place.

DO NOT let your child get sent to this facility. They have zero communication with parents. The place is dirty and disgusting. My son requested to talk to his case manager and she walked up to him and rudely said “what do you want”. He was housed with a child that must be coming off of drugs that had to be tackled and sedated and was threatened to be stabbed with a pencil by another kid. We pulled him out ASAP because we should have been notified about all of these events. I’m filling a grievance with my insurance and I’m reporting this facility to everywhere I can report them to. He was there for a week and we got ONE call with the doctor. My son has been home for to days and can’t sleep because of the trauma he went through at
this dirty disgusting hospital. His case worker was NOTHING but rude and mean.

I was treated with the greatest of care. Everyone was kind and sincere . Everyone whom i met genuinely understood my feelings and I will always refer others as this place is Heaven sent and All the people were treated with dignity and made to feel significant as equals and the atmosphere was archangelic and I am very thankful and I feel I was positively blessed by every person I came into to contact with as I felt a real spiritual connection to the fulfillment of my desired recollection and ultimate recovery . I will definitely call my time there a supernatural act of restoration. I just want to finish up by saying Thank You to Dr. Jones and all the people that made me feel like a person aught to treated standing in my shoes. God Bless You BHC Alhambra Hospital.
Sincerely,
Mr. Darrell Gordon Trombley

I was recently sent here after being wrongly placed on a 5150 hold by my spouse who was mad I was trying to leave him. I missed 3 days and my arrival here because of how overly sedated I was at the ER. The entire process of everything was very traumatic. The only reason I am giving 1 star because well I have to but also most of the staff was friendly. I spent 5 days in this hospital. Not once do they provide any sort of therapy. My estranged husband got to speak with a social worker multiple times and I was at the mercy of what he wanted not what was right for me. Locking people up in a hallway full of rooms helps with nothing. Shoving pills down peoples mouths helps with nothing when you don’t provide tools to help with the issue. I was neglected from the moment I went to the ER and once I was here. I was needing help for DV matters and someone to see the obvious signs of what had happened. I was left to myself bruised, still bleeding from a large cut on my finger from 2 days before and I also kept saying my foot really hurts. I asked for ice for it to help with the pain and was told no it’s not prescribed for you. Fast forward to when I got out, I was finally able to help myself once I was free. I went to a different ER to get the treatment I needed this whole time. It was determined I actually had multiple fractures in my foot which I was made to walk around on. That ER also helped me with filing a DV report and making my home a safe place for my kids and I. I was told when I left I would have an appointment set up for therapy. It’s not therapy it’s just a psychiatrist for more drugs. Not everyone wants to just take your drugs. Some want to work their problems out and need professionals to help with that. How on earth is it that I can be accused of attempted suicide and get not a single one on one therapy session (telephone, in person, zoom…) nothing. But my ex got provided with all the resources he needed and has had multiple therapy sessions. The pillows are a joke, it’s uncomfortable, they may or may not have underwear for you. The clothes are paper and you are very limited if you ask for another pair of anything. Our bathroom light was out for 3 days so we had to shower in the dark. The entire mental health system is a joke I have discovered after this but this hospital specifically why do you not provide any therapy? How do you expect people to have better tools when they go home if you provide nothing? In 5 days I learned to breathe for 4 seconds and how to eat a raisin in a very sexual way. How would you like me to use that next time I am in crisis or trying to run away from abuse? Hopefully changes will come because my life has been ruined after this incident and I suffer from horrible PTSD (the ERs fault) but maybe if you offered people to talk to I could have gotten help before it got to this. The doctor spends maybe 60 seconds with you and will threaten you with a 14 day hold based on whatever was written about you. All I learned from this experience is to never ask for help and always say your fine. A whole week of my life is gone, 2 weeks pay and I am now 100 times worse then when I came in and still stuck on my own to call 5,000 numbers to try and find a therapist. Along with my legal actions I’m taking towards the ER I will be putting my anger from this all into fighting for changes to the 5150 laws and what mental health hospitals have to provide for patients.

staff are very rough with the patients. they do not try to meet patients where they are, and in fact they seemed to take pride and joy in asserting dominance and control over us. they also promised phone time but didn't give out the phones, the list for phone calls was rarely abided by, and the doctor was never in so getting discharged took way longer than it should have. upon discharge, i had to beg the staff to look for my bag because he didnt believe me when i said i had a second duffel. i also left the facility with multiple bruises from being restrained. there are definetly worse psych wards, but most of the (male) staff here were very unnattentive. The men specifically were always engaged in locker room talk when I approached the counter, and they'd dismiss me with a wave in favor of hearing me out. most of the female staff were helpful though, and i appreciate how the nurses and case workers would try to meet me halfway.
