I was just advise by the lead shift nurse Taylor at Dignity Health St.Johns hospital off rose, to pull out my own I.V. *video on Nextdoor app* tw: discrimination

I arrived to the ER at 1:30 am on Saturday 10/19 due to sharp pain in my ribs. I was unable to breathe or walk without pain. They rushed me in and to a room for X-rays and cat scans. I was recently at this hospital for pneumonia 3 weeks ago so I was very confused at the pain as I thought I was better.

The pain was so bad and I was so distressed the nurse DJ went and asked the doctor for pain meds based off of what he saw in me. He brought back morphine. This helped immediately but the pain was back within 45 mins to an hour. I was standing clutching the bed out of distress.

I have had 4 kids and have never expirience the sharp pain and anxiety that came with this. There were tears down my face and shifting positions was difficult.

When the doctor came in he said according to the scans my pneumonia was actually getting better but my lung must be inflamed. He stated he would give me anti inflammatory and steroid and left the room. I was in so much pain I didn’t think to ask him anything until the nurse was in. The nurse Dj gave me said meds, and said I was being discharged. I was confused and asked if I was being sent home with meds to which he said no I could buy ibuprofen. I was still confused because why would they administer morphine just to ask me to buy my own ibuprofen when I had to be wheeled in here. I asked dj if he could at least prescribe the ibuprofen so my insurance could pay for it. He leaves to come back with a whole new prescription for ibuprofen and a steroid. Now I’m even more confused because I was about to be released with no care regimen and now I have a care regimen? Naturally I asked for a lead nurse.

When Taylor, the lead nurse arrives, I explain to her the excruciating pain I’m in and let her know I’m just confused because I was about to be sent home with no care regimen but now I have one and the doctor wasn’t going to explain any of this? Taylor begins to speak over me and tells me that the cat scan says my pneumonia is better and I should be in less pain today then 3 weeks ago. I repeated her and said the cat scan says I should be in less pain? Then why did I get morohine this time but last time it wasn’t necessary? Taylor begins a back and forth with me saying she did not state that and that’s where u see this video begin. She walks away and tells me to pull my own iv out twice. It’s not until I’m on the phone with the police that two security guards walk up with DJ, who begins to take the video out while I’m on the phone speaking, didn’t ask my consent, didn’t ask me to lay my arm out, just grabbed me and began removing it as I’m reporting her refusal to help me. I asked for her name and he said he would get it back to me. The security guards then ask me to leave. I advised them I was waiting on him and they told me he wasn’t coming back. I said well u have one nurse advising me to take my IV out and another telling me he’s grabbing her name so I’m going ti wait. I closed the curtain and this man opened it back up.

I had to call the hospital from inside the hospital to give a grievance phone number.

I am Latina and I do feel discriminated against as I came in worse condition and in so much pain THEY gave me something for it and afterwards told me their machine “says” I should be in “less pain”.

This is discriminatory and sadly not the first discrimination I’ve experienced here but to be advised by a lead nurse to pull out my IV is beyond me and appalling.

Please be careful if you are a POC going to the hospital for pain here. They will not believe you even if they need to give u assistance due to the pain.

Excuse my breathiness and frustration I was in shock that she tried to tell me I was in less pain.

I typically do not leave reviews, however, now that I have sat on my feelings for the last month, I believe it’s time to warn people to avoid this hospital at all costs.

My mother was admitted to this hospital at the end of December. She was severely malnourished. The hospital provided her food but was not tracking her food intake (which would be extremely important for a malnourished person). My father was with my mother and he tracked what she was consuming (during visiting hours while he was able to be present). It was less than 300 calories a day. My father, several times, expressed concern and was disregarded and ignored. After trying to advocate for more help for 5 days, my father asked to see a patient advocate, and suddenly they decided to place a feeding tube and start IV fluids.

My father left after visiting hours one night, and returned the next morning and my mother was completely unresponsive. My father had to make a scene to get anyone to come check on my mom, only for someone to then call a “rapid response team”. It was discovered later she had “been like that all night”. No one noticed. No one did anything.

Shortly after this my mother’s body started shutting down, going into multi organ failure. However, the hospital didn’t provide this information. We had sent her records to several nurse family members of ours for opinions, and we received response after response that her organs were starting to fail.

At this point, we asked to speak with the ICU doctor who FINALLY confirmed her organs were beginning to fail.

The communication at this hospital from the staff was abysmal. Their effort to help my mother or save her life, was minimal. They failed her, and my family, in every aspect. If you are seeking care for your loved one, please pick absolutely any place else. If I could give a negative rating to this hospital, I absolutely would.

I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding the care and conditions at St John's, Oxnard, where my 91 year old father was receiving care for a week. I deeply appreciate the challenging work of healthcare professionals, but I have observed several serious issues that need immediate attention to ensure patient safety and proper care.

Patient Care Concerns:
- At times, failure to provide a sitter: My father, who is a documented fall risk, attempted to get up on his own. The CNAs were unaware that he was non-mobile, despite this being clearly noted in his chart.
- Neglect of IV port maintenance: The IV port in his hand was not inspected or changed for two weeks, even though he had no medical need for an IV for at least one of those weeks.
- Delayed response times:
It took an excessive amount of time for a nurse to administer his eye drops, causing unnecessary discomfort.
He was forced to wait for extended periods for assistance with basic needs, such as using the restroom. In one instance, after I requested help from a CNA, I waited for an hour.
- Lack of proactive care: Staff rarely checked on my father without me specifically requesting it. Basic patient monitoring and well-being checks should be routine, yet they are not being conducted.
- Inconsistent staff attitudes: While some CNAs are truly caring, others display an ambivalent attitude, making it seem as though requests for assistance are a burden or inconvenience.
- Facility and Sanitation Issues:
No hot water in patient room tap.
No hot water or functioning auto faucets in the main lobby bathroom: Handwashing is ineffective because the faucet requires one hand to be pressed down while the other is placed under the water—making thorough handwashing impossible.
- Unsanitary conditions: Dried blood drops remained on the lobby floor for three days without being cleaned.

These issues are deeply concerning, both for my father’s well-being and for the overall standard of care at the facility. I respectfully request immediate attention to these matters and would appreciate a response outlining the steps being taken to address them.

I cannot say enough about the exceptional care my adult son received during his week in the intensive care unit. From the moment he was admitted, Doctor (dreamy) Harsani and nurse Josie demonstrated extraordinary professionalism, compassion, and dedication.

Dr. Nadau and nurse Crystal were incredibly thorough, taking the time to explain every detail of his condition and treatment plan. They made sure we were informed and involved in every step of his care. The nurses were absolute angels, going above and beyond to make sure he was comfortable and well looked after, even during the most critical moments.

Not only was the medical care outstanding, but the staff also provided us, as a family, with much-needed emotional support during such a difficult time. Nurse Shannon's sense of humor created a moment of levity during this stressful experience. They treated my son with dignity and kindness, and it was clear that they truly cared about his recovery.

I am deeply grateful to everyone at the hospital for their expertise and compassion. They made an incredibly challenging experience a little easier for all of us, and I will never forget their kindness.

I’m really disappointed with the experience at this hospital. The Camarillo location seems cleaner and more efficient. We faced an excessive wait time of over three hours, only to be told that while the results were ready, the doctor was too busy to see us. I understand that healthcare professionals can be busy, but this wait seemed unreasonable and seemed more like a tactic to increase billing. Additionally, the emergency room was overcrowded with 40-50 people in a small space, which felt unsafe, especially without any visible air filtration or sanitation of seating areas. Despite multiple requests to expedite care for my mother, who was in discomfort, the staff only offered to leave notes rather than addressing our concerns directly with the doctor. This experience was very frustrating and disheartening.

Absolutely positively will never come here again. At 47 years old I have never once left a bad review because I'm very open and understanding. 8pm on 12/30 came in, had never been in before. Immediately front desk check in lady was dismissive, uncaring and gaslighted me. I was having trouble breathing along with hypoxia, blurred vision, passing out, severe weakness all due to severe anemia. She said, like a panic attack? I said no. I could barely talk or move my hands. My face and hands were numb from hypoxia and anemia. She dismissed my symptoms and just sat me in the cue with a 5 hour wait. We were desperate and panicky because I couldn't breathe so we went to a parking lot and called an ambulance. Came and once again said I have never had a history of or an actual panic attack in my life but recognized the symptoms from severe anemia and hypoxia. First ambulance ride of my life, took me in and I once again explained my issues with anemia, and passing out etc. After getting to the hospital in the ambulance they literally had me get out of the bed and walk into the waiting room back into the 5 hour cue. Um what?!! Never had anything like this happen to me ever. Absolutely no history in any ER in my life time of somehow being told I'm having a panic attack without listening or checking out my symptoms or being taken seriously. So strange. I'm still just in shock this literally just happened. No stressful events occured, there was no panic attack. I had to leave to find immediate care because I still have the severe hypoxia, dizziness, double vision, syncope and trouble breathing. I've never been more disappointed in a health care service in my life and that's unfortunate because I'm a very understanding person that is extremely easy going. Rarely go to a dr or ER, never even been in an ambulance and this situation completely broke my trust in this system. Worst experience ever.

My mom stayed here after a knee replacement surgery, and everyone was amazing with her, from the nurses to Physical therapists and more- all so attentive. I stayed myself at another hospital after a surgery myself in Ventura and had a very bad experience with being ignored so compared to the hospital in Ventura this hospital is 1 million times better and has amazing care. When I have my baby I am going to request St John’s to deliver, because I want to be cared for properly. Thank you St. John’s Hospital 🙌

I called the mainline (805-988-2500) at 1104am on Dec 30, 2024 and asked to be referred to ENT for evaluation because my insurance provider says that St John's is in-network and now accepting patients for that procedure.

The woman who answered the phone (apparently it's the same person because I called more than once and she answered each time) claimed that they did not have an ENT clinic and forwarded my call to Emergency Dept. The Emergency Dept charge nurse answered and hung up on me after telling me that she doesn't work in ENT.

I called back with the same request and also to report the operator who keeps wasting my time and no one I spoke to at hospital knows how to report people for poor customer service. Nor do they know how to get in contact with the ENT dept.

Absolutely terrible new patient experience. The customer facing people are unhelpful and rude.
