Dr. Matthews treated me for what he was convinced was a "slight sprain" of my foot. The previous xrays had been inconclusive, but I had pain with every step. He refused me an MRI, and prescribed 2 months of PT instead; I was also encouraged to continue my long walks, if I could. The pain continued, and he finally agreed to the MRI, which showed a fracture of the anterior calcaneus, and edema of the bones of the joint below the break. Dr. Matthews immediately ordered a shot, a boot, crutches, and a scooter, and I was to keep weight off of it. After a few months, he declared it healed. As well, when asked about the delayed MRI and the new diagnosis, Dr. Matthews insisted MY TREATMENT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE SAME - PT and extended walks on a broken foot!
Last month, I went to a better orthopedist, who ordered a CT scan of the foot, which indicated it had never healed, and severe arthritis had developed on the joint below. I'm now facing surgery, 18 months after the original injury (15 months after my initial Dr. M. visit).
The moral of this story? Arrogance and carelessness make for bad medicine. Avoid this guy!
