I can't say enough nice about Toman and his staff. I am a relatively young person with severe arthritis in my hips and I have been living with a lot of pain for a very long time. I have been unable to walk normally for years, which has also been causing lower back pain and sciatica. (I am told the lower spine is destabilized by trying to compensate for hips that are as compromised as mine were.) I am now two weeks post op from my first of 2 surgeries. My gait has improved tremendously (because i now have at least one good hip) and my back pain is already much better. He specializes in the anterior approach for hip replacement which does not involve any cutting of your muscles to get to the hip joint itself so it is much less invasive and your recovery will be much faster versus the traditional posterior technique which involve cutting through all the muscles on the back of your thigh. I stood and bore weight on the operative hip the very day of surgery and 3 days out from surgery I stopped taking the heavy pain meds because i didn't need them any more. Within 3 days of surgery I was also able to sleep through the night without waking up several times in pain as I have been doing for literally years. The entire staff at Heywood hospital was absolutely lovely from beginning to end and the nurses all behaved as if my care and needs were their top goal rather than my needs care being an obstacle to them completing whatever they needed to do for the day. The anesthesiologist checked in and spoke with me twice before and twice after surgery to make sure he had designed the best possible sedation and pain management plan for my procedure. (I am allergic to a few types of pain drugs and I don't tolerate sedation very well.) From my experience over over the last few years in managing my health care this is the first time I have had that experience with any other medical or surgical team and I could not be happier with the way i was treated and with my results . This sounds weird but I absolutely can't wait to get the other hip done and start doing all my activities again. I used to run half marathons ride horses competitively but my bad hips have made that impossible for a long time... he has given that back to me and the horrible feeling of "its all down hill from here" is gone. I feel like I will get to enjoy the next 30 or 40 years of my life instead of avoiding movement becuse of being in constant pain. If you have severe hip pain that keeps you from even walking or bending normally you will totally understand this feeling. I wish I had not waited so long because the solution was there and I wasted so much of my time.

The staff was extremely polite & professional. Dr. Toman listened to what I had to say & explained a good course of action for me.

My post-op appointment was more than I expected. Dr Toman reviewed all the pictures of my knee & explained everything he had done. I’ve never had a conversation like this following a surgery. It was so nice to understand (a little bit) what was done. Thank you Dr Toman and your staff

I had my first appointment with Dr. Toman today, and I am so impressed! I fractured my shoulder and he explained not only my injury, but how "we" were going to treat it and move forward. He listened to me, answered my questions, and responded to my needs very quickly!

Dr Tolman is an excellent orthopedic physician. He is compassionate and caring of his patients. He is conservative with his care and will go to extremes for the right outcome. He has an excellent bedside manner, will take the time to listen and will explain in detail about your problem and will decide together how to proceed. Will highly recommended Dr Tolman.

Being my first surgery I was very nervous and Dr.Toman was able to explain what was going to happen. After surgery he went thru before and after pictures and explained what he did. I love this Dr, until he turned his back and walked away from us here in Worcester/Franklin County areas. Shortly after my totally Knee replacement, I went for a follow up, to be told he "was out on leave". They covered his back for months, before they couldn't any longer. He abandoned all of his patients.... hopefully he can keep his carreer in order this time!
