My husband and I have been using this practice for several years now. We are comfortable with our current therapists. My husband transitioned smoothly to his current therapist when his previous one left the practice for another job opportunity. Both current therapists have been wonderful about scheduling additional appointments or rescheduling appointments as needed, and with troubleshooting different telehealth programs (our technology has become unable to update in the last few months and some programs require updates to work). I've interacted with a few others on staff due to testing requirements, scheduling, etc., and each experience was positive.

I met Don Lappin around Dec 2023. Since lockdown in 2020, I'd been experiencing significant loss after significant loss, setback after setback, every year.

My stress and anxiety were the highest they'd ever been by Dec 2023. My wife found Don at Newark Behavioral Health and got me the appointment.

I was so worked up, I ended up having a panic/anxiety attack in the waiting room, and left before meeting Don, just as he walked up. Don, being an absolute rockstar, followed me out to help. I dont remember what was said, but he said the right things to get me out of my head, and go talk with him.

I'll never forget that kindness. It was exactly what I needed in that moment.

We worked together until the spring of 2025. He helped me work through a lot of stuff, and helped me develop the tools I need to better manage my stress and day-to-day worries.

Don, thank you so much for everything.

I really wanted to leave a good review, however the circumstances have changed.. significantly. I have spent the past year with my therapist, building a fantastic relationship. She helped me in ways I never thought possible. I truly looked forward to our weekly meetings. I just met with her not even a week ago, only to find out two days later that she was let go from the practice. No rhyme or reason. That is beyond heartbreaking to not only myself, but all other clients I'm sure she bonded with and helped. I was also told by Newark Behavior Health that I would be transferred to another therapist at the practice. I proceeded to call today to cancel all future appointments with whomever, only to be told my appointments/sessions were already cancelled. So not only did they lose a GREAT therapist, they didn't keep their word nor try to keep me as a client. I am beyond disappointed with their so called professionalism and would not recommend anyone to this practice. Find a place worth your time and that will put you as a client, first. Because it is definitely not them.

Unprofessional, Don’t waste your time. I was treated here for 2 years and there was a point I really enjoyed this clinic and the therapist I was provided. I took the time to write a glowing email about how the therapist was an amazing help to me and how I admired the clinic. Until recently I lost a parent, and they fired my therapist with no warning or final session.!? I called and emailed to express my concern with how I could move forward while abruptly losing yet another transformative person in such a short time while still grieving the loss of my parent. She was extraordinary at her job so to get an email she was fired, I was blindsided. I have received no responses or call backs in 4 days. How can you run a mental health clinic without taking into account the mentally ill? I do NOT recommend this clinic because they will run you around and are unresponsive to their patients that desire to be better people and ask/need for help. I can’t even cancel my sessions because no one will return my efforts of calls and emails. Don’t waste your time, efforts, and money because when you’re at a pivotal point, they will rip your person from you and not take you into consideration.

I highly recommend this office, and even more specifically, Stephanie Calhoon as a counselor. Over the years, I really struggled to connect with various therapists at other places in Delaware. I’ve been seeing Stephanie for a little over a year now and I can really see the positive impacts that our sessions have had on my life. I still have a good amount of work to do for myself, but I have noticed progress in many areas and how my thought patterns are changing in healthier ways for the better. I seriously can’t recommend Stephanie enough.

The office itself is clean, and bright and colorful. It’s a welcoming waiting room with good technology for checking into appointments. I appreciate the filtered water cooler, and the special treats like stickers or candy that are sometimes available.

As far as the office management policies go, while I understand and respect the fact that missed appointments really impact the schedules of the professionals working there and it’s not fair to them or other potential patients seeking therapy- the missed appointment fee bothers me as it relates to accessibility and has the potential to negatively impact people who may already struggle to afford therapy as it is. I haven’t run into this situation personally, but I do hope that the office makes exceptions and considerations for patients that this could be an issue for.

I was looking for a reputable place to start counseling again. I’ve been doing this for years on and off. After reading some of the positive reviews I decided to start going here. I was drawn by the fact that I could choose who I wanted. Each therapist had their picture and professional biography on the website. So I began therapy sessions about 6 months ago and my therapist and I really clicked. When you’re in therapy you need someone that you can relate to. So I thought everything was going great and I abruptly received an email from Newark Behavioral Health that my therapist was no longer with them just like that. They did offer me if I wanted to see someone else there. I was truly upset that my therapist that I had a therapeutic relationship with was just abruptly taken away. Even though they offered me to see someone else I do not agree with that. Anyone who has had any type of therapy in their life you know you begin to bond and trust that person so in my opinion you can’t just cancel people out and say “hey by the way” we have other people you can see. Life doesn’t work like that and that is very shallow and superficial. I am extremely disappointed in this organization for being so selfish. I will decline to be placed with another therapist there because you just don’t do that to your clients/patients. Making rash decisions could be the difference between someone’s (client/patient) life or death
just saying. Shame on Newark Behavioral Health and I would not recommend them to anyone. Maybe they need to be more inclusive and open minded. If you call yourself Behavioral Health why would you do such a disservice to your clients/patients? It didn’t seem like a very comfortable place anyway. The receptionist didn’t really speak and I just wasn’t feeling the place. They lost a good one (the therapist). Seems like they need to go to Inclusion training and learn how to deal with people that aren’t like them. I STRONGLY DISCOURAGE A RECOMMENDATION FOR THIS PLACE FOR THERAPY
YOU COULD BE NEXT!!!!

I was going to write an incredible review because of how great my therapist is, but as of today my therapist is no longer working here. I had a session with her just a few days ago and it was clear that this was not planned on her end. Imagine spending a year developing a therapist-client relationship just for the practice to fire your therapist. Unfortunately this practice never surveyed my experience with my therapist and never heard my experience with her. I will directly recommend to anyone in my life not to go here. I honestly feel as a client here that my feelings and needs were disregarded in the firing of my therapist. I know she was fired because once again, if she was planning to leave of her own volition she would've expressed this to me weeks ahead of time- her clear communication was part of what made her a great therapist.

update: I want to add that after this practice fired my therapist, they did not allow me to have a closing session with her and even took away her communication from her to us immediately. Because of this, my mental health over the last few days have declined. I have become more anxious and sad because I know I cannot communicate with my therapist at all. This is very dangerous, I am sure there are others who require more mental stability who have just lost their therapist without a care or thought in the world from the practice. Beware, if you come here, they might fire your therapist after developing a relationship with her for a year and they'll leave you in the dust. DO NOT COME HERE. I'm sure that 5 star reviews here are warranted because of the therapist-client relationships. But in terms of the practice and the owner, they do not care about you or your mental health. They will abandon you without your therapist if they decide your therapist isn't a cookie cutter, college textbook example of a therapist. Truly messed up. Hey to the owner reading this, everyone needs something different from therapy! Some people may benefit from talking to a robot and other people want someone with empathy.
